The Kuna women have the ancient tradition to make these quilt like "Mola" clothing with geometrical and zoomorphic designs. The Mola idea originated with the tradition of Kuna women painting their bodies with intricate designs, using available natural colors; in later years these same designs were woven in cotton and later still these were sewn using cloth bought from the European settlers.
The Artistry of a Mola Panel.
Molas are hand made using a reverse appliqué technique. Several layers of different-colored cloth (usually cotton) are sewn together; the design is then formed by cutting parts of each layer away. The edges of the layers are then sewn down; the finest Molas have extremely fine stitching made by using tiny needles.
Mola panels are normally made in pairs. The Kuna people believe that everything in the Universe comes in pairs just like a man and a woman each is similar but uniquely different. Usually there is a pair of Molas on a blouse one in the front and one in the back, these two Molas portray the same subject, look very much alike, but are different only on small details of the design and colors which makes them harmonize each other beautifully.
